Ahakoa he iti, he pounamu–Although it is small, it is precious Part 1

Koru 2 is well into their Grow Waitaha, Digi Awards journey. This year the theme for the Digi Awards is based on the whakatauki: Ahakoa he iti, he pounamu–Although it is small, it is precious.

First, we discussed what that might mean to us as a class. The main idea that came out of the discussion was that we could have a positive impact on our community by creating something simple. But what?

Meanwhile, Mrs Harris had been having some conversations in the staff room. Here's a video breaking down a problem some of the teachers are having:

Our next step was to begin empathizing with this problem and ideating - generating some ideas on how it could be solved.

Our big project idea is to build a website resource for teachers. The site will be filled with videos that provoke a certain positive emotion or feeling, for example, calm or focused. The teachers will be able to access these videos for their classes when needed. Some of us even want to create videos for the teachers that help destress or energise them.

We began upskilling in Keynote, flip a clip and Garageband with the idea of creating animated videos that provide the audience with the positive emotion. We have been following the design thinking process for our project.

Empathise: We each decided on a target group, for example, Koru or Kākano kids. From there, our teams generated surveys to find out what type of things we would need in our videos.

Define: The data from the surveys gave us plenty of information for our videos such as what the audience likes to look at and the music that would appeal to them.

Ideate: We spent some time brainstorming ideas as a team. What colours, images and sounds do our target audience appreciate?

Prototype: We are now at the prototype stage, creatively constructing our digital outcome - an animated video. We've been working in teams and managing our time successfully.

Our next step is the test stage. We will need to get some feedback from our target audience. We will then make any changes necessary.

Some of us have been learning about Google Sites. We will use this app to create our website. There will be a special web design team.

Watch this space for the final outcome, coming in week 5.
